Layne Michael Leads the Coastal Racing Husqvarna Team to a 2 nd Place Finish at Unadilla GNCC

Wednesday, September 14, 2016 | 5:15 PM

The Husqvarna-backed Coastal Racing team captured three top-five finishes in the premier XC1 Pro and XC2 Pro Lites classes on Sunday for Round 10 of the Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) Series in New Berlin, New York. Layne Michael highlighted the team's efforts with an impressive 2nd place finish in XC2, while teammate Craig DeLong battled through tough conditions to finish 5th in the class. Additionally, Ryan Sipes secured 5th place in a highly competitive field of premier XC1 Pro riders.

Held at the historic Unadilla Motocross venue, this round's motocross-style features allowed the Coastal Racing team a chance to showcase their experience and skills in more than just the woods. The XC1 Pro class was the first to take off in the 1 p.m. afternoon race, where former professional motocross racer Ryan Sipes put his Husqvarna FC350 inside the top five on the opening lap.

Sipes spent a majority of the three-hour racing battling back-and-forth with Jordan Ashburn and Chris Bach for the 4th place position, where he only got stronger as the race wore on. Sipes was able to increase the gap between himself and the 6th place rider to nearly one-minute on the final lap as he secured the 5th place position after eight laps of racing.

"I felt that I had plenty of speed to be in the top three but I just made too many mistakes," Sipes commented. "I would go fast for a couple of miles and then make a big mistake and lose time. The lappers were super tough, too - it was kind of luck of the draw but I picked some bad lines and got held up pretty bad because of it. I rode a lot and trained a lot over the break and I felt good coming in, so I'll take this race and try to learn from it. I really want to be on that podium, so that's the goal for next round."

In the XC2 Pro Lites Class, it was Michael who captured the holeshot aboard his Husqvarna FC250, with DeLong powering his Husqvarna TC250 close behind in 3rd. Michael continued to lead the way on the opening lap but DeLong dropped back to 9th after succumbing to a big crash a few miles into the first lap.

Michael battled with arm pump early on, where he dropped back to 3rd place briefly before putting on a mid-race charge toward the leader. The West Virginia native caught up to within four seconds of the leader, Josh Toth, before getting tangled with lapped riders and going down in the railroad section. From there, Michael climbed his way back to within striking distance but it wasn't enough time to make the move for the lead. After three-hours of racing, Michael came away with 2nd place in the XC2 Pro Lites class, allowing him to jump one place up to 3rd in the championship standings.

"I really wanted to get out front early on and put a charge to get away but I got arm pump pretty bad for about the first three laps," Michael said. "After we pitted it was gone and I was back to my normal self so I focused on running Toth down at the end. Unfortunately, I made a mistake on the last lap and he was able to get past the lappers. I'm bummed because I'm looking for another win but he was riding well and I was riding well, so I can't be too bummed."

Following a big crash on the opening lap, DeLong spent a majority of the three-hour race charging his way back to the front. The Pennsylvania native climbed up to the 6th place position and eventually made the move to overtake 5th as the two-lap card fell. DeLong was able to maintain the 5th place position to the end, where he earned his tenth consecutive top-five finish this season.

"I had a big crash a few miles in that dropped me back pretty far at the beginning of the race and I was forced to play catch-up all race long," DeLong said. "I fought hard to catch back up to the top five and I was able to make some passes but I fell again and wasn't able to get going right away."

DeLong's consistency has allowed him to maintain 2nd place in the XC2 Pro Lites Championship standings with three rounds remaining in the series.
