Obermeyer Suzuki Race Report: Big Buck

Wednesday, April 15, 2015 | 2:35 PM

On a perfect day in Union, South Carolina the Suzuki boys would ride a tidal wave of ups and downs.

The day started off really good for Jake Froman and Cole Kirchoff as both got of the line well and avoided trouble in the opening turns of the 12 miles of perfect trail.

Jake would come around lap 1 sitting in 3rd place and then dropped the hammer on lap 2 propelling him in to first place in 4-Stroke A lights. As the race wore on Jake would continue to get faster and worked his way through the pack of riders to find himself in the top amateur spot and sitting inside the top 20 overall going into the final lap.

With only a 12 second cushion between him and the guy on his tail at the 4-mile to go point the team had to make a critical call. The calculations had been made over and over on how much fuel would be in the tank at the finish line, would there be enough, if we stop him and take 12 seconds to pit will it cost him top honors. The decision was made and Jake was waived on to go. Shortly after Jake disappeared into the woods the team started to panic and took off with a dump can of fuel just in case.

Top amateur would once again be illusive for Jake, as his machine would come to a stop 2 miles short of the finish. By the time the team found him and fueled him he had dropped back few places and ended up 2nd in class and 27th overall.

After Coles mid pack start, in usual fashion  he started moving to the front and laying in some great laps. His day would change from a day of racing to a day of salvaging some critical championship points as a rock would damage the shock linkage causing Cole to back off and ride it to the finish claiming a 7th on the day.

Cole is Currently sitting 2nd in points, while Jake still sits in 1st place in his class.
